EPA Sued for Not Regulating Oil and Gas Wastewater

eipThe Environmental Protection Agency finds itself being sued by environmental advocacy group, largely because of earthquakes in Oklahoma and the handling of wastewater through injection wells.

The groups recently filed suit claiming the EPA has not adequately regulated the disposal of waste from oil and gas drilling. The lead group filing the suit was the Environmental Integrity Project, whose senior attorney Adam Kron said, “These rules are almost 30 years overdue.”

The suit wants tighter rules on the disposal of wastewater because of its link to an increase in earthquakes in Oklahoma, Colorado, Ohio and a number of other states. The legal action contends the EPA has neglected to reform rules despite admitting in the 1980s that stricter requirements were needed.

‘It’s definitely a more waste-intensive industry than ever before,” charged Kron. “If new rules were needed in 1988, they are certainly needed now.”
