France Considers Total Ban on U.S. Shale Gas from Fracking

France is considering a total ban of U.S. shale gas because of hydraulic fracking, according to a report this week by Reuters.

The wire service quoted French Energy Minister Segolene Royal who has started an investigation to determine any legal way for the ban since France has banned shale gas exploration using hydraulic fracturing. She said contracts signed by French gas utility Engie and power utility EDF with a U.S. producer resulted in the import of LNG which contained 40 percent shale gas. EDF is a wind-power company that has operations in northwest Oklahoma.

“I have asked the two companies why they weren’t vigilant and I have also asked for an examination of a legal means for us to ban the im;port of shale gas,” Royal said in parliament.
