USGS Studies Show Water Contamination from Wastewater Disposal Site

The U.S. Geological Survey has released studies that for the first time show water-quality impacts directly due to what it called an unconventional oil and gas wastewater deep well injection disposal site.

Two recent studies were conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey, the University of Missouri and Duke University. They indicated the presence of wastewaters in surface waters and sediments near an underground injection well close to Fayetteville, West Virginia.

The government agency said they were the first published demonstrating the water-quality impacts to a surface stream because of activities from a disposal well. But the studies did not determine how the wastewaters migrated from the disposal site to the stream.
