Weekend rains took care of the drought in western and northwestern Oklahoma, according to the Oklahoma Mesonet.
“Obviously the drought is going to take a huge hit, although there will be a few areas that still didn’t get their fair share—western Roger Mills for instance, and parts of the Panhandle,” said Gary McManus, State Climatologist. ‘But our main drought impacts, such as the increased fire danger due to a delayed green-up of vegetation, as well as stress on pastures and crops, should be largely eliminated due to the moisture received.”
Some areas of southwestern Oklahoma received 4.5 to 5.5 inches of rainfall in the past week. Rainfall in Altus totaled at least 4.5 inches while Ardmore’s total was more than 5 inches. Waurika received 5.5 inches of rainfall.
More rain is expected this week and McManus, writing in Monday’s Mesonet update remembered, “Oh by the way, it was about this time last year that it started raining and pretty much didn’t stop until August.”
