State’s Economy is Considered One of the Worst in the Nation

While Oklahoma struggles through oil company bankruptcies, tumbling prices and a massive state-government budget hole, the state’s ailing economy is one of the worst in the U.S.

A new report from a Washington, D.C.-based publication called State Policy Reports ranked Oklahoma’s economy 47th in the nation and area states were not much better.

Kansas was 46th while Nebraska ranked 42nd. Utah ranked number one in the U.S. while Colorado was 9th. California was second strongest in the Index of State Economic Momentum which ranks states based on personal income growth, employment growth and population growth.

State Policy Reports indicated that states such as Oklakhoma that rely on natural resources have lagged and “struggled due to declining global prices for agricultural commodities.”

Oklahoma and Kansas saw a 0.4 percent drop in jobs between February 2015 and February of this year while the national job growth was 1.8 percent.
