New Law Grants Weight Exemption to CNG Fueled Vehicles

One of the new laws signed recently by Governor Mary Fallin gives a weight limit exemption to vehicles fueled by compressed or liquefied natural gas. Under SB 1317 by Sen. Clark Jolley and Rep. Wendel Watson, the vehicle will be allowed to exceed the gross vehicle weight limits and any axle weight limits by up to 2,000 pounds.

Governor Fallin signed it late last week into law. It takes effect July 1, 2016.

Under the law, the vehicle whether it is wholly or partially fueled by CNG will be allowed to exceed the gross weight limits by an amount not to exceed the 2,000 pounds that is equal to the difference between the weight of the vehicle including its natural gas tank and fuel system, to the weight of a comparable diesel tank and fueling system.
