Latest in TransCanada’s Lawsuit Against President over Keystone XL Pipeline

Environmental groups are siding with the Obama administration in its fight with TransCanada which filed suit a few months ago over the President’s plan to nix the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to Nebraska. Since the suit was filed in Houston, Texas, the National Resources Defense Council, the Center for Biological Diversity and others filed their amicus brief with the federal courts there.

In their filing, the groups urged a Texas judge to dismiss the lawsuit that seeks $15 billion in damages under the North America Free Trade agreement. They contend President Obama was right to reject the pipeline because it would only increase climate change. The filing of the lawsuit had earlier prompted the Natural Resources Defense Council spokesman in Canada to say TransCanada was “wrong to try to force American taxpayers to pay for its mistakes.”

The lawsuit by TransCanda not only wants the $15 billion in damages but also asks a judge to reverse the President’s decision.
