Massive Wind Farm Wins Early Government Approval in Wyoming

What is being called the biggest wind farm project in the nation in Wyoming has passed another regulatory step as the federal government’s environmental analysis tentatively cleared the way for construction.

The Power Company of Wyoming, a subsidiary of The Anschutz Corporation plans to install 229 wind turbines in 2019 and another 271 in 2020. The project eventually will have up to 1,000 turbines and have the capability of supplying electrical power to 1 million homes.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management released an environmental analysis that allows planning for the Chokecherry-Sierra Madre wind project to be located south of Rawlins to continue. The agency found no new problems after looking at exactly where the developers propose to put the turbines, according to a report from the Associated Press.

The project has been under review by the federal agencies since 2008. It will cover nearly 340 square miles of open sagebrush country in the foothills of the Sierra-Madre Mountains located in south-central Wyoming.
