Environmentalists Sue to Block Right to Farm State Question

An environmental group called Save the Illinois River along with an Oklahoma City Democratic lawmaker have filed suit against the state trying to block the statewide vote on State Question 777, the “Right to Farm and Ranch Amendment.”

Rep.Jason Dunnington and the environmental advocacy organization filed suit against the State Election Board and Attorney General Scott Pruitt, contending the state question would result in a violation of the state constitution. Dunnington, the group, Ed Brocksmith, a landowner in the Illinois River watershed and farmer John Leonard are asking for a judge to grant an injunction to prevent the state from putting the issue on the Nov. 8 ballot.

If the state question were to be passed, it would add a citizens’ guaranteed right to farm and ranch to the state constitution’s Bill of Rights. And it would stop the Oklahoma legislature and local governments from interfering in those rights.
