Worldwide Rig Counts Drop in Downturn







The U.S. oil and natural rig count isn’t the only sector seeing a drop. So is the international count for January 2016, according to Baker Hughes Incorporated of Houston, Texas. The count was 1,045, down 50 from the 1,095 counted in December 2015 and down 213 from 1,258 counted in January 2015.

Baker Hughes reported the average U.S. rig count for January 2016 was 654, down 60 from the 714 counted in December 2015 and down 1,029 from the 1,683 counted in January of 2015.

The worldwide rig count last month was 1,891, a drop of 78 from the 1,969 counted in December 2015. It was also down 1,418 from the 3,309 rigs counted worldwide in January 2015.

The breakdown showed 243 rigs on land and offshore in Latin America, a drop of 27 from December. Europe’s count of 108 was down six. The count in Africa grew by 3 to reach 94. The Middle East rig count stood at 407, a decline of 15. The Asia Pacific count plunged 50 to reach 1,045.
