Oklahoma Corporation Commission Unveils Wide Area Disposal Well Plan After 5.1 Quake

In response to the 5.1 magnitude earthquake striking Oklahoma on Saturday, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission released a statement over the weekend signaling the agency was implementing a wide area response. According to the release, the Commission’s Oil and Gas Conservation Division has been working on a large regional plan to address the continuing earthquakes in such areas as Fairview, Cherokee, Medford and elsewhere in the western region. Operators of disposal wells were notified of the Commission’s actions beginning on February 11th, 2016.

The plan will involve a large-scale regional reduction in oil and gas wastewater disposal wells. The area affected will be about 5,000 square miles in western Oklahoma. The move will involve more than 200 Arbuckle disposal wells.

Complete details of the plan will be announced on Tuesday, February 16.
