Devon Credited with Leading the Way in the Barnett Shale

A new report by two researchers from Northeastern University and the Chinese University of Petroleum credits not mom and pop companies in driving the U.S. shale gas revolution but the big energy firms, especially Oklahoma City-based Devon Energy.

Writing in ‘Shale Stuff, the website devoted to oil and gas exploration, reporter Mark Passwaters says the notion that the small to mid-sized companies drove the revolution is totally false, according to the two researchers.

He explained how Mitchell Energy started the shale gas phenomenon in the 1980s but it was only after Devon Energy bought the company 12 years ago and employed horizontal drilling did others follow the trend.
